Using the local landscape to complement this renovation which started as an old asbestos beach shack and was brought back to life with a modern minimalist renovation focusing on Japanese styling and recycled features throughout. The design brief for this property was to keep the original retro feel and add flood mitigation measures throughout including tiled floors, compressed fibro that sits 50mm from the ground covered by skirting boards to ensure drying of wall cavities in a flood event and marine grade ply and varnish for the cabinetry to try and enhance durability and prolong its lifespan. The stand out features throughout are custom windows made onsite, private retreat style deck with build in bath, custom kitchen and laundry cabinetry made from 25mm thick marine ply designed and built onsite, outdoor bench seats made from reclaimed hardwood saved from the original dwelling and recycled bricks used to landscape the courtyard space. This project has resulted in a soft and aesthetically pleasing design that feels layered by the landscape around it.
